Are Nationalists Better Citizens?

The recent rise in the popularity of nationalist movements tells us that more attention should be paid to effects national feeling on politics. This article considers potential relationship between identity and active allegiant citizenship particularly whether nationalists patriots are better citizens than those who have weaker feelings towards their country. We analyze these relationships using data from European Values Study 2008 2017. Our main models control for a variety political, social, economic causes good include country fixed addition three measures feeling. findings indicate civic is connected with virtually all our outcomes, whereas ethnic frequently worse citizenship. explain results social theory theories prejudice. suggest politicians ignore or downplay at peril.
